In Cairo, in September 1964, the representatives of insurance and reinsurance companies, from 20 Countries, including Algeria, Burma, Cambodia, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Jordan, Korea, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Tunisia, got together for the specific purpose of developing a programme of collaboration among Afro-Asian countries in the field of insurance. Discussions at the meeting revealed full recognition of the international significance of reinsurance. Such recognition did not however, detract attention from the urgency of initiating a thorough re-appraisal of the position and- requirements of Afro-Asian countries and the appropriate endeavours to safeguard their legitimate interests vis-a-vis outside markets. This was not to say that under the aegis of FAIR, the Afro-Asian Insurers and Reinsurers were to consider as mutually exclusive pursuits their own collaboration and their cooperation with the outside markets. This was proved with time that both pursuits progressed apace. The meeting's unanimous decision to create the Federation of Afro-Asian Insurers and Reinsurers "F.A.I.R.", was not merely a symbolic act or a formal acknowledgment of a common aspiration, but a truly realistic manifestation of a meaningful determination, not only to promote the self-interest of the insurance sector, but also to contribute to the realization of the objectives of complete Afro-Asian economic co-operation. |
